I was trying to decipher the reason that Rose had blanked Abe's (previous, in Paris presumably) discussion about Rose taking art classes at Columbia. My guess is that when Rose agreed to return to New York, she had come to peace with surrendering her freedom again. It wasn't that she didn't believe Abe wasn't being sincere at the time....she just thought that Abe was making yet another string of well-meaning promises that would come to nothing in the end, their lives would return to what they always had been. So Rose was genuinely surprised and confused when he presented her with an amazing opportunity (that Abe had had to go out on a limb for). :)
