I remembered your comment only later: Do people actually say that the show should have had Patrick from the beginning? I guess they must, if you say so. But it seems crystal clear to me, just as you said, that his addition to this world works only if the world has been thoroughly set up in the first 2.5 seasons, the Roses are starting to take steps to improve their situation a bit, and we're now ready for a new flavor in the mix. I don't know if they had that in mind from the beginning of the series, but the way it happened certainly worked out perfectly.

I agree that if Patrick had been introduced at the beginning of the series then David would have not given him a second look or know how to appreciate Patrick to give him a chance. Not to give a spoiler but It is noted in a later season that they met each other at the right time in their lives. Oh, and BTW Dan was so nervous about do the lip sync part that he and Noah drank a whole bottle of wine before filming. Dan had meant for it be funny but it turned out being so emotional that film crew ended up in tears. That is when he knew that Noah (Patrick) was there to stay (Of course, being the co-executive producer, creator, show runner and making most of the costume decisions/purchases pretty much made it set in stone.)
