The acting when Pete bursts into tears when Trudy returns is so great. I don't think the scene would make any sense were it not for their performances, because they never say anything about it

I don't think the reason the shot lingers on Joan in the department store has anything to do with her realization that Pete is cheating. She could give a shit, just as we saw back when when Peggy told her about Don. Her dread is her realizing that everybody in the office will eventually figure out that she didn't get the fairy tale ending and had to go back to work. My view anyway. I had never made the connection that Joan's presence in this episode was foreshadowing Pete's "questionable" behavior. Good observation.

That's probably the right read. Didn't think that she really cared, but from an artistic stand point there is a connection I feel.
