Those scenes with the emotional juxtaposition between the laughing characters and the sickened viewers are a real gut punch. No, those kids probably won't "grow up to be Nazis"...but you don't have to be a Nazi to be cruel. It does make me wonder how they worked with the young actors on these scenes. It would be irresponsible to just shoot them. You'd have to do some real table work ahead of time, and help them learn how to portray something truthfully that they themselves shouldn't believe or condone. It's hard to do even as an adult without what we call "commenting on the character" (or getting unhealthily sucked in to the character).

Child actors are tough. They have to be and as filmmakers that is an insane responsibility to make sure that you don't screw those kids up.
