I know Don compares Peggy to Irene Dunne as a compliment, but I'm not sure how to interpret it (I'm not aware of her work as an actress, just what she looks like via Google). Is it just that Dunne was kind of matronly/formal but still pretty? Has always made me wonder.

The opening song is The Infanta by The Decemberists, 2005

I didn’t know how to take this either. Seems like a good interpretation.

Just saw you mention my comment in the opening to episode 7. The theme song is actually A Beautiful Mine by RJD2. I meant the song in the first scene of episode 6 when Betty, Peggy, and Joan are putting on their “uniforms” is The Infanta. You were speculating about whether the song was from the 1960s but it’s from 2005.

In season 1, episode 2, there’s a Cardigans’ song from 1996.

heheheheheh

This whole episode is a metaphor to the Madonna-Whore complex and how you can either be one or the other, but not both (and Peggy kind of calling it out as BS). The guy from the stables is totally put off by Betty having kids - he's not embarassed, it just ruins his fantasy. Same with Don finding out about Bobbie's kids - makes her seem old.
