Did I misread the reaction? I always thought the kid Peggy needed to "say goodnight to" and was holding at mass was her son being raised by her sister....

Weird Magic

I always thought that two of them were her sisters, and one was Peggy's. That's why the sister said the "State of NY didn't think so... doctors didn't think so" line from earlier in the episode....the sis obviously knew about the birth and the family stepped in and raised the kid instead of going to adoption. To me it explained the looks she gave both there and in church.

This was an ACTUAL plane crash in NYC in 1962- the actor who played Pete's father passed away between seasons so this was their way of writing him out of the show

Chris

I think it is her sister’s kid and that the writers wanted us to wonder if it’s peggy’s kid at this point in the season. But I don’t want to spoil anything…

Chris

Was it actually on the same day as the parade for John Glenn?

Chris

I love that moment with Pete’s mom where she sees the elephant, clearly hates it, and then tells Trudie she wants her to have it like she’s being generous. Lots of good out of office scenes — the party, the card game, Peggy’s family…

Chris

Just looked it up. Both happened on March 1, 1962. Interesting.

I'm Catholic. Peggy's mother is a devout conservative Catholic during pre-Vatican II 1962 when there is still Latin Mass and before mid-60s reforms to lighten up on doctrine and social positions. Current day there is a schism between right wing Catholics the former who are very ant-abortion and ant-gay rights and tended to vote fro Trump and "Social Justice" liberal Catholics.like me (and Joe Biden for that matter) who tend to be Democrats- so without spoiling anything we MIGHT see the changes happening in the Catholic Church the same way you saw Paul dating a black woman and possibly as Joan suggests to show the rest of the office how progressive he is

Yes the episodes on Mad Men tend to span a week or two in time and then a week or two between that and the next if you were watching background events during Season 1 and this is just 16 days after the Feb 15, 1962 Valentine's day of episode 1

The way that this show handles history makes you believe that these character actually exist. It's so rich with detail, plus incorporating real history...perfection.

Youtalkingtome

You're right, a good chunk of this episode was out of the office. It was so compelling I hardly noticed.

The times were definitely changing. I love that we are going to see so much of the country change as the show goes on.

'That's the "MO" of the show- not only are the out of office scenes used to round out he characters, but also show you the day to day life of women in suburbia, what a supermarket looked like- when Betty slaps Glen's mom, what people really thought about door to door salesman with he AC salesman that Betty let in the House- this isn't Leave it to Beaver where everyone loves the milkman. or Mr. Rogers where you are friends with the neighbors-- the guy who lives next door to Midge when Don tries giving her the $2500 uses her as a punching bag, Paul's neighbor want to call the cops for smelling pot in this episode....the sho wis very gritty and visceral without needing violence or action scenes- that is the real testament to the the writing

Brian Harris

I’m always saying that none of the characters on Mad Men are actual people, but most of the time, they feel like they should be.

heheheheheh

You know, Matthew Weiner even looked at the weather forecast to know whether it was raining or a heatwave, so he could potentially incorporate it into the show.
