Ted Lasso, Season 2, Episode 9

I love this episode a lot. You need a breather after the previous episode. I also love that Brendan Hunt wore those striped pants to the Emmy after party last year.

That's hilarious, glad he got to keep them! Also we totally agree, it was a refreshing but strange breather.

This is definitely the most divisive episode of the show so far. It's personally my least favorite because I feel that only seeing Beard and not the core players from the previous episode (primarily Jamie, Roy, Ted) brought things to a screeching halt. This was the second of two episodes that were added after the fact, and while I know the showrunners made them standalones so they wouldn't have to alter the plot of the season, I think there were better ways to go about it. But to each their own! I did like the pub guys getting to go on the pitch, that was very sweet. Back in season 1 I mentioned there was one other person that was one-dimensional like Rupert was — that's Jamie's dad 😄 Speaking of which, not sure if you caught it, but his dad's name is James. So not only has Jamie had to deal with abuse, but he felt he had to go by a nickname. Also, if you look up photos from about 20 years ago of the actor who plays James, Kieran O'Brien, there's an uncanny resemblance to the actor for Jamie, Phil Dunster. Fabulous casting, and from a meta perspective, you could argue that's one of the reasons Jamie is so meticulous about his clothes, hair, shaving, etc. — he doesn't want to look any more like his dad than he has to. There actually isn't a trailer yet; the thing that came out recently was just a short teaser. There are no spoilers whatsoever in it, not even scenes from seasons 1 or 2, just pure wholesomeness. So it's perfectly safe to watch once you're done with season 2, if you want to.

We were talking about how similar they looked after the episode ended! Glad we weren't the only ones to notice that. Jamie is the character that we've turned around on the most since season 1. His dad is an absolute monster and if it were my father, I would want little to do with him as well.

I'm really glad you guys enjoyed this episode. I bounced off it the first time, but (eventually) now it's one of my favourites. I think my initial reaction was because it's a real whiplash of an episode compared to the rest of the show. It's also dark, trippy, and fast-paced, which can make it confusing on a first watch. There's a happy ending but I don't think that it is as obvious a conclusion as the writers assumed. * The episode is jam-packed with lots of lovely Easter eggs: The title of the episode is named for a Martin Scorsese movie from the 1980s (still on my bucket list). "once in a blue moon" (a very rare event) 'Blue Moon' is the adopted anthem of Manchester City fans. The two (current, for BBC and CBS respectively) pundits are: Gary Lineker, a former England captain Thierry Henry, a former World Cup winner for France, but more importantly a hero for Arsenal, which is Brendan Hunt's team (so Beard getting abused by Thierry is even more funny and brutal). Va Va Voom: Thierry Henry is naturally cool and suave and that was put to good use by Renault: https://youtu.be/YrShrLl38Qs The song as they leave the pub is epic (and weird). "Fit" is Brit slang for good-looking. "Pull" is Brit slang to get a date with (so to speak) https://youtu.be/MEIRNj0EmH0 Oxford University is comprised of a number of named colleges (s'complicated). Lots of old church buildings in England have been repurposed over the years, so a club in a church building is not that weird. * Brendan Hunt had his first child in the past couple of years so it wouldn't surprise me if that's a narrative element for Beard and Jane in season 3. Phoebe Walsh is a great writer / comedian, but I think she has decent acting skills as well.

Yes you should watch After Hours, it's one of Joe's all time favorite movies! This is why I love the page, we never would have been able to guess all of those tidbits. You are awesome!!

I remember watching this the first time and thinking "what was that?!" but now when I see it again I enjoy it. I do love the three guys from the bar hanging out and having the night of their lives as they do deserve that for their undying loyalty to Richmond. Playing on Nelson Road field at the end to the tune of "we are the champions" by Queen is kind of beautiful! So much unexpected happens this crazy "blue moon" night. There is something here for us all to identify with in one way or another.

There really is. I feel like years from now when we talk about this show, this episode will be mentioned a lot.

This episode was beyond surreal. The whole episode is just the most crazy route of Beard having a night out and you could really say so much about how many subtle and genius moments there were in this episode, moving every situation in a position where the watcher would never thing it would be But for be the scene at the end, in the club, is really next level. It uses the music in the most perfect way, it enhances the surrealism of the moment, but never makes you think "This is too much" This COULD be too much, but it is not for sure. They were brave for doing this and I am glad they did

It was a big swing and i'm really glad they did it too. It was different and refreshing. It was a lot of fun and I don't understand the hate.
