Alien: Romulus (Patreon)

Hey everyone, Joe here. Last night I went and saw the new Alien film. I've always been a huge fan of this franchise and was going to post about it. After seeing Kevin's video earlier today, I felt inspired to break it down. First of all, it's good! Not great. I don't want to discourage anyone from seeing the film especially if they're a fan of the franchise. My issue with the film is the same issue that I have with every "legacy" sequel that comes out nowadays. It's 60% "homage" and 40% originality. So. Many. Callbacks. The amount of callbacks in this film, I don't even think you can say that it's paying homage to the original films. If you rip a sequence or plot detail or hell even the same line of dialogue from the original, slap a new coat of paint on it and shove it into your movie, people lose their minds over it. Why? We have seen it before and better I might add. Sure the effects in this movie are pretty remarkable but so are the effects in the first two movies! Not to mention that Ridley Scott will never finish his prequel trilogy to the original film. Yes, I know that people were mixed on both Prometheus and Covenant. I found them to be endlessly fascinating and had themes that harken back to the original Blade Runner. "Where do we come from?" "Who made us and why?" Those were the questions that these 100 million dollar franchise films were asking, while being absolutely bonkers. I know it sounds like I hated this movie but I will honestly end up watching it a bunch. I would compare this to The Force Awakens. While it has everything I mentioned above, it does have some originality and stuff that I'd never thought I'd see in this franchise, which I really did get a kick out of. The third act of this movie is a weird hybrid of the original and Aliens...with a twist. Don't worry no spoilers here! I did find it deeply ironic that Disney was making a movie about Weyland-Yutani. Anyways, those are my thoughts. Very curious to see what you all think and would encourage everyone to see this in a theater! Form your own opinions and let's talk about it! Thanks everyone.
