As you said, it really is remarkable that these affluent Bluths, living all their lives in southern California, have never learned the most basic words of beginner's Spanish. (And Michael's just as bad as the rest.) I don't have any inside info, but I rather suspect that they knew they had Carl Weathers coming up, so they planted a brief mention of him weeks in advance. This series is too meticulously written not to have the big arcs for the season planned out in advance.
