We do have a school summer holiday over here in the UK and Ireland, which are 6-8 weeks. I think you guys have slightly longer summer holidays in America though?

Also the girls just finished their GCSEs, which you sit at age 16 (I think it's the equivalent of 10th grade in America). From 16-18 you can then go on to do A-levels (grades 11-12 in America), although this is optional and you can leave school at 16 after your GCSEs. You have to do well enough in your GCSEs to be able to continue and do A-levels which is why Clare was worried that they were going to fail and she'd have to make new friends. Also, you find out your GCSE results towards the end of the summer holiday, so the new school year will be coming up soon. Sorry for the long comment but I thought it would be handy to give you guys some context🙂

OK but how crazy is it that you're watching two shows with a character named George Michael in it ? (In case you didn't catch it yet, that's also the name of Michael Cera's character in AD)

Youtalkingtome

For real! That's one of the funniest bits of AD for me. Two shows on Monday with two different George Michaels.

Ok confession, I once set off my Catholic school’s silent alarm.

Donegal girl living in Derry here. Really enjoying your take on this show. This season is so good. Lisa McGee is genius!

So my school had a school building, a church, and a cafeteria. In the cafeteria there was a meeting room for church committee meetings, etc. We used it for band practice once a week and would miss the last half of one class and the beginning of the next (it rotated so we didn’t miss the same classes week after week). Our band instructor worked at multiple schools in the archdiocese. On this particular day with 2 weeks left in 8th grade (the school was K-8), band practice ran over and the band instructor left us there to pack up our instruments and took off for his next school. Or so we thought. We, the 4 of us 8th graders, got the brilliant idea to stay behind and miss the rest of English class with our toughest teacher. What we didn’t know was that the band instructor went into the teachers lounge to check his mailbox on his way out and asked the VP to give us another 5 mins before setting the alarm on the cafeteria. So 15 mins later we walk out the door, the silent alarm goes off, the VP looks out her window and sees us walking back to the school building. She met us, arms crossed in the middle of the hallway. She asked why we took so long, what were we doing, etc. My friends were trying to come up with excuses “uh well you see what happened was…”. Finally I just said, we wanted to miss the end of English class and when she asked why I said, “I just can’t diagram another sentence, I just can not!” She was holding back laughter at this point. She told us we had 2 weeks left of school, don’t do any like this again, and sent us on our way. I suspect that being a “goody goody” who never got into trouble saved us. I wonder if the teachers had a discussion like, “maybe we are pushing them too hard if a student like Joy wants out.”

4 years prior to this an entire 8th grade class convinced a very elderly Irish nun (like the one from the first episode of Derry Girls) that she just didn’t hear the dismissal bell. They left one class period early and were having fun in the park down the street. Years later, when I was in college, that nun was on a plane with me. I was so shocked that she was still alive.

For your information, and according to IMDB, "On Tuesday, 9th April 2019, Channel 4 announced that it had commissioned a third series, which was expected to be broadcast in 2020. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, filming was postponed at least twice during 2020. In February 2021, it was confirmed that filming of the third series will begin later that year. The first episode wouldn't premiere on Channel 4 until mid April 2022". So this season is post-COVID era and also post big international success (it was already successful but I think the COVID allowed a whole new public to discover the show). I remember by then it was a long-awaited comeback in 2022^^

Man, the pandemic really screwed a lot of things up. Obviously the loss of human life is devastating. The effect it has had on the entertainment industry has been insane.
