I hadn't seen this movie since it first came out, so re-watching it accompanied by your reaction was like discovering something now. Some of the actors (not the ones from Guffman!) were new to me at the time, and now they're like old friends. (Michael Hitchcock, of course, also has the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend connection.) Fred Willard is just on fire. Christopher Guest is an astounding multi-talent -- in addition to being a British lord (5th Baron Haden-Guest).

Fred Willard should have been in every movie! "How much you think I can bench press" has been burned into my brain lmao.

I love the way these movies, though they poke fun at some of the craziness among the participants, aren't out to humiliate anybody. On the whole, the dogs we "followed" did very well, and the winner was one we'd come to love. Just as the "show" in Waiting for Guffman wasn't horrible or disastrous -- just sort of a believable middling piece of community theater.
