So the reason Near is wearing Lawliette's mask is kinda sad. In a way, Near looked up to Lawliette as a father or big brother figure, so he chose to wear the mask because he wanted Lawliette to be the one to catch Kira, and he is fulfilling Lawliette's dying wish for him. Light takes it as Near comparing himself to Lawliette but it was just his way of helping Lawliette's soul rest in peace. I do think there might be a tiny element of doing it to snub Light too though, like "this is revenge for killing my brother"/"my brothers face is the one you'll see as you die/get arrested"/"you thought you beat him but he lives on through me" that kinda vibes. On that note, pls pls pls pls if you can manage it, react to L Change the World the movie! It's an alternate timeline where L meets Near. It's a really good live action. Underrated. It's cute, funny, wholesome (apart from the bad stuff that happens) 2 of my favorite Japanese actors are in it, so it's great. (The one who plays Light is the main character in Battle Royale which you brought up before. Though Kiras in it briefly) It gives deep insight into L and Near's origin. You can find it on Amazon. I would literally pay for it if you watch it lol
