Ok so not suggesting who ends up where for any who haven't watched this episode yet and miraculously avoided spoilers over the years, but according to the thematic essay of the story, Mello would never be a good candidate to kill Light. Not that he wouldn't be capable, but because the theme of the story is supposed to represent the disenfranchisement of the millennial youths of Japan after the burst of the bubble. If the story is trying to combat the line of thinking of people like Light, which there are many in Japan at that time, Mello would be the worst one to succeed in stopping Kira rather than Near who's an extension of L's will and therefore, the true nature of Justice. Mello represents everything people like Light are disenfranchised with. He's everything wrong with humanity and honestly, I think there's a reason he's German. 👀 it's never been stated, but I think he is the idea of what led Hitler to try to "save the world" and the way he went about it. So if Mello were to succeed in killing Kira, it would only reinforce Kira's will, causing a wave of extensions of Kira to appear and he would successfully change the world to the way he desired. Matt is honestly the saddest loss in the story. Not because of his death, but because of the show literally tossing aside his character. He's a really cool and interesting character just like everyone else that comes from that school, and there's more on him like that he's a super genius in the field of science so he is a major contribution to the world of science (although he was just as likely to experiment bioweapons) but the director had to make cuts to the story to end it on the right episode and so Matt's air time turned into little more than a quick nod to Manga readers

Could be lol that parts just my theory. My uncle from Germany has the same name, Mihael so I thought it was German. 😶 It does sound Russian too now that you mention it.

the usual German variation would be Michael. Of course Mihael could exist (never heard it so far but that doesn't mean anything lol) but then I would still propably think he has Eastern European roots haha. I just hadn't watched DN or anything related to it in a long time so I thought maybe they actually said that :D

So I googled it and it literally says "Mello appears to be Russian and German for sure" 🤣 so let's just assume he's half and half and the best of both evils.
