Chels

To clear something up to make more sense of what's going on (since the director did a poor job of it) Mello and Near are rivals, Near lacks Lawliettes (L) fierce competitiveness, which pisses Mello off, so this arc of the show is more about Mello trying to beat Near at catching Kira, while Near is focused on using Mello as bait to catch Kira. Also I watched a very interesting study on the thematic meaning of the Death Note series that gives insight to Light. The concept is based off a cult that formed in Japan when they entered an economic recession. This cult did the most horrific, obscene crimes in the name of making the world a better, safer place. To be initiated into the cult, they had to show loyalty by killing their families. But the reason the Japanese government was terrified of this cult isn't the crimes or the message they spread, but that the members were all made up of the future of the country. Young, perfect students who were bred well, had good grades and lots of friends. Perfectly normal teens and young adults in college. So Light represents the students called "the lost generation" and the concept of Kira represents their beliefs that the adults failed to protect them and form a safe and reliable world for them to grow into so they should clean the world, essentially. L represented justice so thats why he had to die. They see the fall of justice. This gets lost in this second arc because of the director making choice differences between the Manga and anime. Light caring about his family is a directors choice to make the audience sympathetic enough to keep Watching after L's death, but in the Manga, Light almost finds excuses to kill his family because they're a burden. But at the same time he knows for the time being, he has to keep his father alive because if he dies, all suspicious eyes will be on him. Another decision that dilutes the meaning comes at the end of the anime so I can't say anything yet, but its a sleeper doozy.
