Juan Carlos Jaimes Jr.

I'm glad you enjoyed this episode. Here is where I like the Original a little more, at least from what I remember - it's been a while since I've seen it. In the original, this was the 2nd, if not the 1st, time someone noticed that Ed has a metal arm & leg, thus realizing the brothers committed the taboo. It was also super cool to see Ed toss his jacket for the first time, and you get to see the toll of human transmutation. Liore took place a lot later in the original, so it seemed not that many people knew why human transmutation was taboo. But here in Brotherhood, since this is the 3rd episode, you feel like everyone knows the consequences for doing the taboo, and the scene of Ed showing off his arm and leg doesn't have the same impact since he did the same pose and action in EP 1. Finally, the Liore arch took, I think, two episodes in the original. You connected with Rose much more, and her struggles felt more genuine. It feels like she is just a confused girl in Brotherhood. I think she felt more like a person in the original than Brotherhood. If you thought this episode was dark, I promise you that the original was even darker, which is why I like the tone of the original a little more than Brotherhood.

2023-01-12 05:06:48 This is one of the stories that I felt the 2003 FMA anime did better than FMA: Brotherhood. Overall I think the 2003 one had a stronger start, spending a bit more time to set things up, but then petered off cause they ran out of manga story to adapt, whereas Brotherhood feels like it blitzes through the beginning stories.

Yeah I agree. The 2003 version did a much better job in terms of setting up the characters, word, and exposition. I think in terms of characterization/world building brotherhood kind of expects you to jump into it and already know what’s happening because originally a lot of people who watched it either read the manga or watched the previous version so it’s extremely confusing that first two episodes before this. When Wes and Steph were watching a lot of their confusion could’ve been avoided in the 2003 version. Also the backstory I feel doesn’t hit as hard here (with the human transmutation etc) because you kind of don’t see the arrogance Ed originally had when attempting it or like the full backstory with their mom and absent father etc. That all being said, the brotherhood version definitely has a stronger plot the latter half of the series and I know a lot of people who’ve seen both prefer brotherhood. I just personally think storytelling wise that the original was better at explaining everything to the audience while making us really attached to the characters. Brotherhood unfortunately falls a little flat on characterization for me to start with.

Yeah, brotherhood is definitely superior in the later half. The 2003 series was great when it had material to adapt, but when it ran out they needed their own original story, which while okay, doesn't measure up.
