I'm not TOO versed in parental leave legally but I know in Germany you get a year off paid and you can stay at home for up to 3 years with job security (though you get paid less after the first year). Dad's can also take up to 36 months of parental leave and they can take it at once or in smaller sections. They don't get paid by their employer during their parental leave. They can however apply for "parental money" from the government which is lik 65% of their last earning

I am from croatia but i live in austria and both countries have a similar system. You get a year of paid maternity leave, you are allowed to prolong it (but then you get paid less for that extra time). I know that in austria fathers have a right to take it as well, additionally, for a few months. So usually, mothers take the year off, get back to work and then fathers take their paternity leave as well. Its pretty good. In croatia, when you have a second child you can choose to stay at home for 2 years. Because it’s considered you have more “work to do” at home since you now have a newborn and an other child.
