True North- Thank you so much for another Once Upon a Time reaction, Sora! Now... I enjoy this episode, and I especially love and appreciate Once Upon a Time's overall interpretation of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. This isn't one of my favorite episodes, but I still really enjoy it a lot! First... I especially love the mystery behind the Stranger coming to town in the end, which has made both Emma and Henry feel very uneasy, as well as curious. Emma so far is the only one who has been able to enter Storybrooke because she's the Savior. So, just who is this mysterious Stranger? :) I also really love the Blind Witch. I'm not at all a fan of the TV series'... Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I have seen a few episodes and I know Emma Caulfield, who plays the Blind Witch, is from Buffy. Nonetheless... She's really great here as the Blind Witch, even though it's a bit of a small role. She's creepy and her look is quite good. In a weird way, she has a similar look to Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and yet she's a completely different kind of witch. And yes... She's definitely blind. Not the actress, but her character. I don't know how she might have known that Hansel was holding a stick to use against her, but then she might have heard that he had dropped it when he tripped, and even heard him pick it back up off the floor. Her hearing and sense of smell are exceptional, like the senses are heightened for most people who are blind too. In regards to Hansel being foolish to take the cupcake and eating it... There are theories from fans of this show that it's possible the Blind Witch had cast a spell over the many sweets throughout her house to lure children in and to tempt them, which is why Regina sternly warns Hansel and Gretel not to eat anything. It's possible that children are lured to these tasty treats through her dark magic. Maybe a child is more susceptible to her magic over these treats, the hungrier they are. And it's possible that once Hansel takes a bite, her enchantments immediately alert her to the children being in her house and stealing her treats. Whether or not these theories are true... I choose to believe they are because otherwise, Hansel is simply foolish, and this part of their backstory isn't great aside from it being simply another retelling of the fairytale with the added twist of the Evil Queen sending them there to retrieve her poisoned apple meant for Snow White. I really like this idea that he falls for the temptation due to the Blind Witch's magic. If not... then I really don't like Hansel at all. He's just a child, but boy... Come on, Hansel. As for the rest of the backstory... I quite love and really appreciate that Regina is revealed to have actually kidnapped Hansel's and Gretel's father so she could get the children to do her bidding, rather than him simply abandoning them, like their father had done in the original fairy tale. I know parents do wind up abandoning their children in the real world, but it breaks my heart. So, I love this twist that Hansel's and Gretel's father doesn't abandon his children after all. I also really like Hansel's and Gretel's father as a character, and Emma helping him and the children to become reunited again in the end. While the end resolve seems simple overall, I always feel deeply touched upon seeing Hansel and Gretel become reunited with their father after all these years they've been separated, due to the curse and Regina splitting them up when she sent the children and their father away to a part of the Enchanted Forest some time before she casts her curse. Now... They are all still cursed and don't really know one another, but at least they are together again and have been given a new chance at becoming a family again. In regards to why Regina keeps encouraging Emma to take the children out of town, despite her knowing that they can't cross the town line... She definitely knows that the children, like everyone else who has been cursed, can't leave without "something bad" happening to them. It hasn't been said or shown just yet what that "something bad" is, but I suspect that Regina is hoping that whatever will happen to them should they leave, is something bad that will happen to Emma too. This is my only thought as to why she might want to see Emma leave with the children. Also... Michael (the children's father) states that he recognizes Emma had called him under false pretenses when he immediately recognizes that her car is just fine upon seeing the children in the backseat of her car, in order to get him to come out to see the children. Which I love. How very clever of Emma, all because she had hope that he would find the courage to step up and be their father. Her car doesn't actually break down like Emma made it appear. She stopped just before she hit the town line. Not because she believes at all in Henry's warning that no one can leave Storybrooke without bad things happening to them, but because she just really hoped for one last chance to convince the children's father to take them. I love, love, love Emma's storyline throughout this episode as she fights for the children so they can stay together and be together again with their father. This is reason for the Hansel and Gretel story being told, so that Emma's story could be further developed as well. And I absolutely love it!! Emma struggles deeply with her own past, as you will continue to see more of throughout the show. Especially with her belief that her parents just abandoned her, as Hansel and Gretel believe their father's done to them too. Emma's story throughout this episode is quite beautiful and sad, and it's one of the things I love most about this episode for sure. And this storyline for her helps her to grow even stronger as a character, even though I already love her, and have since the very beginning. And Jennifer Morrison is fantastic in playing her. :) Next... I feel that Regina is attempting to fill the hole in heart she's felt for a very long time when she offers to take Hansel and Gretel in within the Enchanted Forest. She absolutely wants to be loved. She just hasn't gone about it the right way because of her hatred for Snow White and her inability to get over her loss. Plus... It's revealed that any love in her life has been rare. And you can definitely feel the sadness in her eyes when she's speaking with their father too, which actually makes me feel a little bit badly for her. Also... Regina's costume in the Enchanted Forest, like always... looks amazing! Her gowns and costumes are all amazing!! And so is her hair within the Enchanted Forest backstories. All of the costumes throughout this show for all of the characters are sensational!!! :) And lastly... Another of my favorite moments throughout this episode aside from the end scene with the mysterious stranger arriving in town on his bike looking for a place to stay, and Emma fighting to convince Michael to take in his children... Is the moment in the end between Emma and Mary Margaret, as they talk about how Emma brought Hansel and Gretel together with their father, then they go on to talk about Henry's belief that Emma is Snow White's daughter. I love their playful banter, and especially the moment when Mary Margaret picks up Emma's baby blanket upon sensing something familiar about it. Sadly, she shrugs off her strange feeling as she drops it back into the box. However, things are slowly changing, and the curse is weakening little by little. :) Overall... This is a pretty good episode. I can't wait for your continuance for Once Upon a Time, and I'm so happy that you're looking forward to seeing more as well!!!! Thank you again, my friend!
