Clip shows, like this, are basically a matter of budgetary necessity. Because they spend more on one episode, they have to take money from another, and clip shows are one way to make up the difference. However, Xena and Hercules are responsible for the best clip shows I have ever seen in television. They make them much more fun and inventive than most others even attempt. In this case, I love the idea of Gabby going to try out for the Academy. (The episode title is a play on New York City Academy of the Performing Arts.) I like her making friends and the identities of said friends. I love the extra clips from some of the sword and sandal Hercules movies, and the actual Spartacus with Kirk Douglas and Jean Simmons. Very clever. If you have to do clip shows, do them well. And they do! ... There was more than one opening at the Academy (four, I think) and Gabby really did win the competition, but decided to go back on the road with Xena, as she said.
