Glad you seemed to enjoy the pilot - I had been a fan of Kathryn Morris before this series (you will see her guest in Xena later down the line) and this role was perfect for her. A real trailblazer lead female role that needs to get more recognition today especially. For me she totally made this series and was so compelling. Regarding the comment you made about asking the mother why she didn't seem to care, this is really her first step into the world of cold cases having been used to dealing with current homicides and you can clearly see by the end of the episode her gaining awareness of the importance of going back and getting justice for the forgotten. It becomes a very big thing for her character. And also when more is discovered about her own family background as the series goes on, it becomes more clear why she said that to the mother. By the way I will send a subtitle file with the second episode, I had meant to do so with this one - whoops!
