My Fair Lady- Yay!!! Thank you very much for your marvelous reaction to such a beautiful movie that I love so much, Sora!! I absolutely love this movie!! And I deeply love Audrey Hepburn, who is one of my all time favorite actresses! As well as Rex Harrison, who plays Professor Henry Higgins... a phenomenal actor in his own right too! I most certainly understand your annoyance with Professor Higgins. I may love his character, and I love Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins, but he is absolutely infuriating. In a strange way, this is the charm of his character. And I appreciate his character and his actor for this reason. Audrey Hepburn is a phenomenal actress, and she's one of my very favorites of all time. Her role as Eliza Doolittle is beyond reproach. She's beautiful in this movie. Funny, witty, and I just adore watching My Fair Lady over and over as she goes up against "poor Professor Higgins." Professor Henry Higgins makes me laugh so hard in this movie and while he's conceited and thinks only of himself, I can't help but admire his tenacity. And I love his songs as he sings about why women can't be more like him, or how he's too good to let a woman in his life. Rex Harrison's way of singing is so different from anyone else in other musicals, including back in the early days of musicals. And I just love it! As for my favorite songs... I love Eliza's songs, Wouldn't It Be Loverly and I Could Have Danced All Night. I also love Henry Higgins' song, I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face. I love all of the songs, but these just stand out to me a bit more so than the rest. And of course... Oh my gosh, the costumes throughout this movie!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!! I love the whole black and white, as well as gray, theme shown at the Ascot races. I especially love Eliza's gown with the big bow, and that incredible hat she wears! And I deeply love, love, love her incredibly beautiful and lavish white and silver ballgown that she wears at the Royal ball. Thise jewels she wears... Gorgeous!!! Audrey Hepburn is absolutely and stunningly beautiful! It's no wonder that she is known to be one of the most beautiful actresses of all time!! Because she absolutely is! :) Now... This movie isn't by any means a romance. We've all grown so accustomed to love stories and romances in movies, because Hollywood has a tendency to throw a romance in every movie out there. Even in all the Marvel and action movies where romances... as exciting or as beautiful as they can be, are not necessary. My Fair Lady is a very rare exception. Because there is no love story or romance between Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins. This movie is all about their growth in becoming dear friends and seeking respect for one another. I absolutely love how Eliza doesn't wind up in love Freddy, as she returns to Henry Higgins in the end because the two have found love. Not so much a romantic kind of love because their relationship is beyond just romance, even if the hint of romance is there. But a very deep friendship built up from respect and admiration. It's quite beautiful and the ending couldn't be more perfect for two such strong willed characters. Henry Higgins doesn't deserve to have Eliza come back into his life with how he treats her, but in the final scenes and in their final songs together, you can see that Henry has grown and even changed a little. He isn't able to admit it or even understand it in one afternoon. However, I feel that over time... had this movie continued on to expand on their relationship after Eliza returns to him, I do believe we might have seen a much bigger change in him too, much like we see the change in Eliza as she grows throughout this movie as well. And this is the theme and message within this movie. Both Eliza and Henry are good for one another. Despite his inability to see past himself, Henry has helped Eliza grow a backbone and to think for herself. And he even admits to her that he likes the changes in her. And Eliza has most certainly changed his own outlook too, and she has made him see that he's not perfect like he likes to believe he is. I love their relationship. I absolutely love seeing Eliza finally put Henry Higgins in his place and knocking him down when no one else has ever been able to do so, including his own mother. Eliza needed his help to learn how to speak properly so she could become a lady and to find her voice, while Henry needed her help to discover that he isn't the most perfect human being alive and to show him that he can treat others with respect and kindness without people seeing him as weak. Freddy is a sweetheart, and I can absolutely see the possibility of a romance between him and Eliza some time down the road because Henry Higgins are just dear friends. And he does show Eliza that he does truly care about her in a way that any woman longs to be loved by someone. However, Higgins much later in this movie also implies that despite his kind hearted nature, he's also a bit of a spoiled rich boy. Higgins doesn't believe that he would be able to stand living in middle class society for long, which is where he would no doubt end up in because his family would wind up disowning him for falling in love with a middle class, or lower class lady. Maybe Higgins is right, maybe not. Who's to say? The point is... Romance is definitely not one of this movie's themes. It's merely hinted at. And lastly... Audrey Hepburn sadly doesn't sing any of her own songs in this movie. Her singing voice is actually Marni Nixon who is known for not only being Eliza's singing voice, but also several other actresses' singing voices in classic musicals such as Maria's singing voice in West Side Story, and as Anna's singing voice in The King and I, as well as the singing voices for other female leads in classics such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Alice in Wonderland, and Mulan. Audrey Hepburn was disappointed they wouldn't allow her to sing for herself, but the director of My Fair Lady felt that Eliza Doolittle needed a stronger voice than what Audrey had. It seems sad, and I feel bad for Audrey Hepburn because she couldn't sing for herself. However, Marni Nixon is phenomenal and so I understand the director's decision too. Overall... I love this movie so much, and I easily consider it to be one of my all time favorite musicals, along with Singin' in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, etc... So, thank you very much again, Sora! I am so happy you watched this movie for me, and I enjoyed watching My Fair Lady again with you so much. :) And now... I look forward to your next reactions like always, and will continue to request more classic musicals down the road, so long as you're interested in watching them, of course! :) Thank you, my dear friend!! Sincerely, Heidi
