I agree that it's nice to see another god besides Hera being the source of trouble. Ares is a good choice for a divine foe for Hercules. ... So, the king, Iphicles, became the king because, 25 years earlier, a group of young virgin maidens went into a drunken, murderous frenzy and killed Iphicles' father (and possibly his mother, as well) and then, immediately after his dad was butchered, Iphicles, now king, had an orgy with the soon-to-be former virgins who had just slaughtered his dad, and then he married the lead one, who became queen. And their two sons are fully aware of the story of their mom assassinating their grandfather and having a wild sex party with their dad to celebrate. Well, I don't want to cast aspersions on another's culture.
