Ok they sort of explain the slayer line thing last episode. That monster with all the eyes explained to Anya that when willow brought buffy back she reinserted her into the slayer line. In season 1 when buffy died kendra was called. As she was next in line. And when she was killed faith was called because she was next. When buffy died in season 5 she was not in line anymore because she already died. But willow when she brought her back with magic that allowed her to be put right back in line. This also allowed the first to now be capable of destroying the slayer line because it was disturbed. That is why it attacked now. Now if faith or buffy dies there will be a slayer. Xander has come far from were he was. He has always tried to looks out for his team and observed everything and so he is a sort of like a watcher. Which 4x22 sort of foreshadows his desire to be one under giles.

Back when Buffy aired, they put out a Buffy magazine every week or so that contained a lot of behind the scenes and cast interviews. It was really great. Almost all guest actors would say they wish/wanted a scene with Spike/James, when asked. I remember all the potentials we're asked, who is hotter: Spike, Angel, or Xander (something like that), and everyone answered Spike from what I recall. Felicia Day specifically referred to them filming the beginning of this ep when Spike is training them, and said "Spike for sure....we were in an embrace for hours" so she had to spend hours having him hold her lol, lucky girl
