A very heartbreaking situation. Wes DID betray Angel by taking Connor away. Gunn has also betrayed the group by withholding information before (his demon-killing group) and Angel has betrayed the group before when he fired them and his actions afterwards. They were all trying to protect something or those close to them. The prophecies and Wolfram & Hart's fuckery did convince Wesley that Angel would turn again and kill the baby. Angel once told Gunn he would trust him when the time comes to kill Angel, and Gunn goes through with it. I think Angel would have wanted Wesley to keep Connor safe from him if it came down to it, at least I think that's what Wesley was thinking.

And oh yeah, the vampires are supposed to be super strong, but it depends on the vampire, more ancient ones like Darla, Spike and Drusilla and Angel are stronger, and even then it depends how trained or special or evil they are, or who they were sired by. Darla was sired by the Master, so her lineage would be stronger. Lesser, younger vampires would not be as powerful, and it would depend how special they were too, they would be more ordinary, so strong trained humans could take them on, like we have seen here and on Buffy.
