Looking back to Eko and his first encounter with the monster, it backs off too. Maybe because Richard and Eko were sinful murderers it thought it could use them. It then takes the form of their dead loved ones and tries to get them to submit to its will. Richard was repentant and feared going to hell and yearned for his wife. Eko took no bullshit and willingly sacrificed his "goodness" for Yemi to not be dammed to the same fate. So he could not be manipulated and the monster killed him. It also didn't kill Locke in the first encounter thinking it could use him to kill Jacob. Locke was the long con the monster pulled on Ben.
