the window was not big enough. it was around the size of a head but his body would not have fit. look at mikeal when he was looking through it only his head and part of his body is shown. charlie also closed the door so desmond won't die.they would not have time to get out before drowning. charlie is dead. we saw him drown this episode.

1. They could have done a better job showing that the hatchway hole was smaller or that it was damaged for Charlie to have made it out after the pressure equalized, but would he have made it all the way above water? If Charlie could have made it out, he might have tried. Or maybe not. 2. Desmond was running like a maniac toward the screen to see and talk to Penny while the grenade was going to go off. If being that near the blast didn't kill him, it would have knocked him out and would Charlie have been able to get him out? Charlie saved him. That fact is almost never brought up in this scene. 3. Closing the door from inside not only keeps Desmond out, and safe, but ensures the jamming equipment remains off and no one can block the signals again should that room be "de-flooded," ensuring communications and perhaps the chance that Claire and Aaron get rescue. 4. Like we saw many times through the season, by the mere fact of Desmond getting involved the "future" was changed, even if the end will be the same. Charlie dying the first time, he might have been knocked out first by Mikhail's grenade, but this time he ran to the door to keep Desmond out. He wanted to fulfill the vision completely so that Claire and Aaron get rescued.
