I served in the Navy, I joined when I was 20 and got to see a lot of the world. I got to see parts of Spain, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, the UAE, Italy, and Portugal during the Gulf War back in the 1990's. I also got to see a tiny bit of Columbia when we were doing counter drug ops. People join the military for all sorts of reasons, most commonly because they are poor and the military offers college money and a steady paycheck. Patriotism is a factor but not always the main factor. The trouble with communism isn't the system, it's not bad on paper but every communist country ends up being an oppressive dictatorship. Sweden and Norway are good examples of democracies that mix socialism and capitalism very nicely and are by most measures are very happy and prosperous countries. The problems in the USA are related to things like health care systems that bankrupt people. When I caught pneumonia for example I ended up losing everything and was homeless for a few years after, sleeping on the street and in shelters. In Norway there is a real safety net that insures people don't end up that way but in the US if you are not rich you are one illness away from losing everything.
