true crime media love to throw around terms like psychopath, narcissist etc, usually for shock value, but I think Chris Watts is one of the few cases where he genuinely might be sociopathic or otherwise lack empathy. it's why he can't lie believably and doesn't understand how he's supposed to feel in this situation. he has no frame of reference to understand how "normal" people are supposed to feel and act. much like Casey Anthony, he learned one way of behaving, which was believable in most everyday situations, but looked entirely out of place in an extreme situation such as a murder investigation, a situation in which he never had to chance to "practice" his attitude before. I don't find many other cases that are so unsettling to me personally.

also, I know that "genius psychopath" is a stereotype/myth which I absolutely hate because most people with no empathy that I've met are pretty dumb, and I want to thank Chris for staying true to reality by being pretty dumb 🙏
