i think definitive proof could have been found to prove it was James all along if the items used to perpetuate it were tracked, such as purchases of the stockings. i feel so bad for her poor dog and the cats killed in this. police could have possibly tracked the cats to 'free' ads in the paper or local adoption facilities. my personal belief is that she 100% did this to herself but i'm not sure that i believe she was disassociating. she hurt herself but always made sure she would be found and rescued, and never caused serious injury (although she began escalating it when doubt was cast on her). to me, it seems like munchausen syndrome. would be interesting to compare to a modern case.
