This piece took an aggressive  turn and it was initially to be just a regular portrait and I ended up adding canvas and the hand so I’m sorry if these steps look more confusing 🧐

1. Base sketch: as always not the prettiest or the most accurate i focused on the main angles of his face. I used to take more time sketching but nowadays I rather improve the proportions as I go and relating them through color 💜

2. My base tones were set using a flat hard brush and I kept my pallet focused on orange and green shades

3. I experimented smudging this time with a more textured brush I developed  and I think it looks more natural gives skin a more realistic base to work details on 😤

4. First turning point here I wanted to improve composition so I stretched my canvas and focused on working the chest anatomy before adding the clothes to him ⭐️ I always paint them “naked“ first so I can understand how the folds and volumes will work on the fabric

5. All the gold effects added to the fabric where made using overlay and screen modes 💫

6. Second turning point: I wanted to give more storytelling to the piece so I had to do a few changes to the shoulder in order to make the arm go around and make the anatomy work 👁👁

  • for self healing purposes and motivation recharge I started adding a few highlights and skin detail

7. That hand had me questioning my whole purpose but I ended up looking at my own in a tiny mirror to make it work 👌🏻

8. I always add a bit of perspective blur to my pieces to help and Gide the viewer to my focal point which was the face and the brush stroke 💜
