Mega64 made it an entire decade +1 before they ever paid a single dollar in advertising. What broke the streak? They were offered a cost-effective chance to promote themselves (and their booth!) at Anime Expo 2014. They were told for only a few hundred bucks, they could have a short video promo blasting on the convention center map screens all con weekend long. Mega64 obliged and gave them a 30 second promo frenetic enough that it would catch the eyes of ANY otaku (rendered in stunning 240p as was requested by the tech team). The video ran that weekend... stuttering and barely playing at all throughout the full four days. Technical difficulties. Mega64 was refunded, and hasn't run an ad at an event since.
