I had the same issue as Rocco. It was widescreen with the letterboxing but it was also pillarboxed to 4:3 (so there were black bars on all 4 sides). I think the full picture was there, it was just cramped into the middle of the screen. I zoomed in with my TV and that made it work.

A couple fun facts, Lloyd Kaufman has said that the scene with the dog being killed got more hate mail and theatre walk-out's than any other scene in the movie. You're also not wrong about The Aquabats loving this movie, they have a song called "I Love The Monster" that was released as a free download after they released Myths & Legends Vol. 2; it's still available today.
