It's been a while since I watched it, but I think his appearance in the dreams reflects how either he sees himself, or how his wife sees him. The movie starts out and his life is stagnant, he's not really doing anything, he's on the sidelines. Then he starts getting this positive feedback, he feels good about himself, his wife starts being into him again, so this person gets a sexual dream about him from that positivity. Then he's getting sucked into a shitty deal where people aren't really respecting his wishes, and he participates in this sex fantasy and completely fucks it up, and so his self-hatred turns into everyone having nightmares about him. [Edit: That's my take on the in-universe meaning of the movie. As subtext, I LOVE Rocco/Shawn/Derrick's interpretation of it, and feel like you guys have been through enough shit to understand this type of media circus plot.]
