Why is TV Static Monochrome? | Nostalgia Nerd

We've all seen TV snow. Whether because the TV is detuned, or just because we're trying to tune our Mega Drive into a new channel. But why, on a colour TV is this static still presented in a monochrome format? Why aren't these random signals also random colours? Well, let's delve into a byte size episode to find out a bit on how TVs work, and why colour only appears for certain signals. ** For exclusive videos, mystery boxes and other rewards, please consider supporting me at; https://www.patreon.com/nostalgianerd ** ☟Sharing☟ If you wish to share this video in forums, social media, on your website, *please do so*! Glad I'm not the only one who's sat there watching the "no signal" bouncing, wondering if it will ever hit the corner perfectly! The first DVD I ever bought was a dodgy copy of the first Tomb Raider film from Minehead market whilst on holiday - and when I played it on my original model PS2 it played in perfect quality, but Black and White. Can I infer from what you said here that the reason for this is it was likely encoded in an NTSC standard, but just with region lockling set to zero so it would play here? Legit DVDs that I bought soon after played fine, so it wasn't the PS2 or TV.

Excellent bit of tech here. You should do one on how to use a scope to identify video signals (RGB, composite etc) when people are testing their gear 👍
