I do wonder if one of the ideas behind it was to make it harder to install non-windows style operating systems. I remember when it first came out that it almost treated installing Linux as a virus.

Yes, I remember that! Installing Linux on UEFI enabled systems was a freaking nightmare. Always had to switch to legacy boot and everything... ugh.
