https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/ftc-americans-lost-770-million-from-social-media-fraud-surge/

Americans fall for a lot of fraud scams on social media. The FBI notes that Americans lose $770 million from fraud last year. To avoid getting scammed by these social media techniques, limit who can see or interact with you or your posts, opt out of targeted advertising on the platforms, if friends or family ask for money via a social media platform - call them first to make sure it's actually them. Keep an eye out for romance scams (apparently these are rampant!), and research companies that are advertising goods on social media (you can do this by googling their website plus the word Scam or Complaint or Problem).

Researchers figured out a way to fingerprint machines for persistent web tracking using GPUs and the Web Graphics Library, an API that does graphic rendering. Their work called DrawnApart uses the WebGL to create predictable shader computations, and since they are predictable, they can use the shaders to create the fingerprint and create a sequence that can be matched to a GPU.

Researchers used silk fibers from domesticated silkworms (how do you domesticate a silkworm? No really, I'd like to know. Can you teach it tricks?) to create environmentally friendly digital security keys.

I have always disliked UPNP, it always felt likes a Bad Idea (TM) letting clients open up ports on a firewall, and here we are. *sighs*

Myself and others, as well and it’s the first thing we make sure is “turned off” when we set up a new router.

February might be a good month to change out the networking gear. 🤔
