Great episode. Great coverage. An abstract connection between the first and last stories disturbed me. The seemingly common practice of handing down older ‘smart devices’ to children, carries some disturbing risks. Unpatched vulnerabilities, in unsupported (or not updated) devices could be exploited by criminals who target children. So I can empathise with the 5 eyes argument against Facebook’s encryption in some way. However, I don’t trust the 5 eyes to use those ‘backdoors’ only for solving the horrible crimes of child exploitation and human trafficking. The backdoors they’re ‘requesting’, could also likely be discovered, and exploited by such criminal groups. Both sides are using similar, if not the same, tools and exploits. Whether the exploits are developed by a nation state or not. Let’s not overlook the fact that criminal enterprises exist which have more resources than most nations, and they are easily capable of developing similar malicious tools themselves.
