Hey friends,

I've been silent on this topic for the past week, and had a flight booked to visit my little sister, who is 5 months pregnant (YAY!). Right before I left, I found out some depressing news. I was planning to work while on vacation, but decided that I needed some time to grieve before I made the announcement.

Kerby Kitchen, Hak5 mascot, friend, and one of my favorite fur babies, passed away last Monday. I found out on Wednesday last week. She had kidney failure along with some other complications. She stopped eating and started hiding from people, which is completely opposite of her normal behavior. Her health has been deteriorating for a long time now so we knew what she was telling us, and we knew it was inevitable. Darren was with her when she passed and she was in her own home so she was comfortable. She was born September 2001 and passed September 2017. This little girl had a very long life and lived in some amazing places, including a house right near the beach where she loved to chill in the sun. She's traveled from Virginia to San Francisco and has been with Hak5 from day 1.

We're announcing this news on Hak5 later today. It's my first time ever crying on a show but honestly I feel that way every time I think of her. I tend to mask my emotions on our educational shows so if I seem super happy for the next week, well, I guess it just means I'm still a pretty decent actor. Please check out the Hak5 ep for a little tribute of some of our favorite Kerby appearances since season 1.

We love her. We miss her. And I'm so grateful I was able to say goodbye to her.

The show will resume normal recordings on Monday.

Condolences on the loss of a fine cat. I have lost two in the last 10 years, and it is never easy.

I know how you feel I cried like a baby when I had to put my cat to sleep, raised her from a kitten she was also 17 years of age.

Shoot, now you made me cry. I hope you can find happiness in the fact that she had a great life with you.

Snubs / Darren, Sorry to hear about @hak5kerby...Our pets bring us so much comfort, laughter, and even surprise us with the craziest things they do. Pets are like family in the hearts of those who appreciate them the most. Maybe, just maybe, when a little time passes, the @hak5 team might consider adopting a new kitty to carry on the hak5 mascot duties as "Kerby 2.0", aka hak5kerby2! Best wishes my friends, and keep doing the great work that we all appreciate! CJ
