Digital Art, or rather AI Art, is a divisive medium. Last week I posted a piece of AI-created fan art, and there were some strong responses. Consequently, I'm curious as to peoples' thoughts on the medium and the best way to collect responses seems to be via a poll.

I have very conflicted feelings myself, and your vote will help me decide whether this Patreon uses or avoids AI-assisted content. Even as an amateur writer, I'm very much aware of the impact of AI-assisted tools. I've played with them in the past, and it's abundantly clear that software like ChatGPT, NovelAI, Sudowrite, et al, are increasingly being used to produce fiction, some of which, I suppose, this Patreon is in direct competition with for your attention and support. As with the written word, so to visual media.

In any case, I'd love to know your opinions. Please vote below, and/or leave a comment!

I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with AI art. I hate it because I know how hard it is to make a decent drawing, let alone a set of drawings to make a comic. And typing a series of prompts to get decent-looking art, better than most people can do on their own, feels like cheating. Big time. And I don't really want to hear that it's more work than you think. That cleanup in Photoshop is required and sometimes images are cobbled together. It's still waayyy easier. It's not art. 3D render programs aren't quite art, they don't require you to draw. They're more like making a movie. Like you're a director, cinematrographer and lighting designer rolled into one. It's not as good as drawing, but it doesn't feel like cheating the same way as AI art does. I think about the way, back before the internet, there used to be people who called out comic book artists for copying a panel from another artist. It was shocking and shameful when a prominent artist from a major comics company would be shown to have copied poses from a panel drawn by another artist years earlier. But now, that kind of cheating pales when compared to AI. It's a trifle. And yet... I can see the appeal of AI. You can create images that are very close to what you have in your head, even if you can't draw or don't have the patience to make a decent 3D render. Creating a set of illustrations for a story can enhance a story, and this is an awfully tempting way to do it. The technology is there. It's not going away. We can't put the genie back in the bottle. The image of Cindy you posted made with AI is quite stunning. If you created an illustrated version of Constant using AI art, I think it would appeal to many people. There's a sameness to the AI images that I am seeing. It's pretty easy to guess what images on a site like DA are made with AI. But AI is in its infancy. Imagine what options will be available, what images will be able to be made in the coming years. It's both depressing and fascinating. Fucking AI...

Thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed response! Near the end, you suggest that an illustrated version my story would probably appeal - but if done with AI, would it be ethical do create something like that. It would stil be a lot of work, but nowhere like commissioning an artist to do 40+ images. I suppose this is where the dilemma arises, in part. If I asked, say Fraylim to illustrate the whole trilogy - that would be dozens of images and take many, many hours of the artist's time and cost--well, a lot, I imagine. Probably more than I could hope to make back off of it. Generating those images by AI might be the only feasible way of making it happen. But then, I'm effectively stealing an artist's labour, aren't I? And that doesn't sit right, either.
