The way I interpreted Nami's reasoning for keeping her plan a secret was based on her childhood guilt over her strained relationship with her mother. Young Nami was shown to be willing to cheat, steal and lie to get what she wanted, and the mother decided that her ideals that she was trying to teach Nami were important than her life when she decided to not lie in front of Alrong. So basically that whole deal Nami made had more to do with Nami grappling her own personal conflicts with child logic as opposed to anything rational. In her child's mind, it was basically "I don't want to betray my mother's ideals, yet I only know how to lie and steal to get what I want, so I'll keep everything to myself to help everyone, even if they hate me."

I think it was handled better in the anime where everyone knew what she was doing but they were purposefully acting hostile to her so she wouldnt feel guilt if she decided to run away.
