Asteroidea

As someone who has been hyping up the manga since chapter 1, I feel like I share some tiny level of responsibility for the popularity that led to it getting an anime adaptation. So yeah, with regard to this scene, sorry about that! By the way to add to the character age discussion, It’s partly a Japanese societal thing. Generally in the west we’d consider maybe 18-25 or so to be your prime of youthful exuberance/experience, when you achieve independence, experiment with yourself, have your first great loves and losses, etc. It’s why so much media will either feature actors that age or the kind of sculpted Hollywood types who’ll look like they’re 24 well into their 30s. In Japan, that is kinda shifted downwards to 15-18. Once you turn 18, you’re an adult and expected (whether you go to university or into a job) to act like one, and become a cog in the societal/corporate machine, so your last couple of years of high school become your golden, halcyon days. That’s why so much Japanese media has a high school setting, and by extension it’s why a lot of the Japanese media that doesn’t have a high school setting still puts its protagonists in the 15-18 age bracket to evoke that feeling, even when it’s not a Shonen manga or anime specifically aimed at that age group. The older audience is supposed to feel that nostalgia for that time of pre-adulthood freedom. Not to say that it doesn't cause some real weird situations now and then, but it does make a bit more sense in context. Plus the guy behind CSM is kind of pushing back on the idea by making all of Denji's 'romantic' interactions with older authority figures weird and gross on purpose, so Morgan's reaction is totally what Fujimoto had in mind, at least on my interpretation of it.

Michelle

so how about memorable experiences for your first kiss huh

Tim Chaos

Right on all accounts. And yes, I'd agree that Fujimoto absolutely wrote these interactions with older women to be a bit icky. At the very least, Denji's first kiss was NOT what he wanted, and an older drunk girl taking him home isn't what he had in mind for his dream either...Among other things, Chainsaw Man is a coming of age story, but it's much more nuanced than most anime that take these sort of sexy situations for granted and/or use them for wish-fulfillment, fanservicey purposes. In almost any other anime I'd say "you're not supposed to think about it THAT much" but this one is subtly *about* these things, in my opinion

Since you asked, the weird psychedelic snail in the OP is a real thing! When I saw it I was like "THAT'S THAT THING I SAW ON REDDIT!!" lol (google at your own risk, it's cool looking but nasty lol) here are some snapple-lid fun facts about it! The glowing, pulsating snail eyes is actually because of a parasitic flatworm called Leucochloridium paradoxum aka the "green-branded broodsac" that infects snails! It hangs out in the snail's eye stalks and takes over the snail's motor functions to force its eyestalks pulsate, which looks like a caterpillar wiggling along. The super bright eyes attract birds who eat the eyes, and the parasite reproduces in the birds' GI tracts. Ain't nature fun?

Loved the reaction btw! Was looking forward to seeing you bartenders enjoy a round of anime drinks XD

I'm pretty confident the story wants you to feel icky about what's happening to denji.

amberrr

i just feel like denji is getting manipulated left and right. not only because of his chainsaw's, but just denji himself. denji has no experience at all of what is right and wrong about relationships/sexual encounters. and is suddenly getting pushed into these situations with older women that are just taking advantage of him.

The Quadfather

I read this YouTube comment about the ending music: “get on” in japanese is pronouced "gero", which can also mean vomit, and "chu" is "kiss", so when the song says "get on chu" it can be understood as vomit chu, pure genius

Tim Chaos

don't mind me, gonna copy-paste this on the youtube to boost y'alls engagement lol
