hey, thank you guys for expanding and taking on this many shows at once. Not sure to what degree for how tiring that is, but it is much appreciated and thank you for all your work!

Morgan was cracking me up this episode :D The tits comment threw me over the edge loll

I think you guys were getting somewhere when talking about her abrasiveness and lack of social awareness when it comes to others. I think this is largely-like you guys said- because she grew up knowing she was the Avatar and all the grandiosity of the title and couple that with growing up in an isolated compound w the white lotus, her parents, and cycling mentors. She didn't grow up in her village in the south pole and often didn't have people her age around so she never got to use/practice social emotional skills at normative rate. Thats how humans largely learn how to behave in relationships/society, by interacting with peers from a young age. But the show didn't dive enough into that especially at this point, and I think it gets forgotten because they only mention in passing a few times.

Michelle

dustin number one korra hater lol. dont worry my mans she'll get better.

Lorenzo Baxter

I think she already IS better. Obviously they don't focus on it a lot right now, but after the Wan 2 parter, she seems more focused on her mission and less of a drama queen. And her time here with Iroh just served to make her more mature. Even before the second half of the show, I think she grows a lot (given it's kind of under the radar)

Just keep in mind Korra is 17. Not an excuse but teenagers don't consider being nice. And like Sean was saying, her impulses are to lash out. Not like she's a piece of shit, just an asshole sometimes. But this episode does feel like a turning point. I don't think Korra is now best friends with all spirits. But I do think it's totally believable she redeemed herself in the eyes of that bird spirit. Again NOT her character as a whole, but she's earned a friend mark from at least one spirit.

Ci-Ci

Yeah it definitely a series of stepping stones for her. The bird is just a small step in the direct of where we will find her in season 3 and 4. Also I do think developmentally she is in a range of normal asshole-ish-ness for a teenager 😅 Especially one who didn’t have much peer to peer interaction to learn from. Brain development wise her attitude towards adult authority figures -in adolescents-is actually quite common.

I know that the last two seasons of the show are Korra's finest moments and where she develops the most, but I gotta say this is one of the times I rarely disagree with you guys. Korra is very brash and reactive but I think she's more humble and caring than she gets credit for. She even explicitly said she only hit the dragon bird out of fear; she got involved in the civil war because she was protective of her home and eager to be a good avatar; she has apologizes consistently when she was wrong. A lot of the difference with Korra is that she was isolated and trained by the White Lotus till 16 while Aang went off and had adventures with his friends as a normal kid. Again, I love you guys and these reviews and I know they were filmed in the past, but just wish I could get your current takes on this!

I think it bares emphasising the way Korra was raised. She was raised by a bunch of elders in an isolated environment, hidden away from the world at large. She was taught to use the tools that only the Avatar can use. So quite naturally when faced with a problem those are the tools she uses. What they didn’t teach her is what makes her the same as everyone else. Aang found out he was the Avatar and ran away from the responsibility. Where as Korra has had that responsibility drilled in to since she was three. Her entire self worth is tied to her ability to be The Avatar. In season 2 we see a teenager at their first political rally. A teenager that’s been told it’s her job to fix everything, and do it quickly with out anyone getting hurt. We all know the world just isn’t that simple. Korra taking the baby phoenix back to the nest is not meant to be a redemption. It’s meant to be a single step in the right direction. Learning that acting out of fear can cause harm. Learning that letting your emotions control you sooner or later leads to disaster. Whether you’re male or female, it’s not a gender specific lesson. Can Korra be brash, stubborn and annoying? Of course, but what teenager isn’t. And when you consider the environment she was raised, I think her characterisation is damn near perfect.

Wan Shi Tong showed himself to be very hypocritical in this episode imo. I was fine with his take in ATLA, but now he's allowing destruction to happen himself, but if spirits do it it's okay. which is not bad writing, I mean antagonists can be hypocritical, that is actually pretty realistic. just no "Wan Shi Tong did nothing wrong" anymore

I’m sorry, but saying Aang got to have a “normal childhood” when compared to Korra is absolutely ridiculous. Aang was an orphan whose people were victims of genocide, and spent much of his childhood on the run from an expansionist regime waging a war that many think he is responsible for ending. Korra grew up with her parents, mentors and community there to support her. All of this posturing about her not having a “normal childhood” and being isolated is really just head cannon. She may not have had a journey like Aang or Roku, but compared to Aang, Korra grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth.

It’s refreshing to see you guys acknowledge the faults of this show. Specifically with the weird steps back taken with Korra’s character in season 2. I basically felt the exact same way Dustin did when I watched it for the first time too.
