Jam

This Episode is something else lol.

Michelle

see this is why avatar is my favorite animated show. those dance sequences? a thing of pure beauty and very impressive, especially for tv animation.

Sean Silence

I always enjoyed this episode because it gives us a look into normal fire nation life and how manipulated their society is. Also, I can't wait for next episode. Some people call it filler, but it's one of my favorites.

Kelsey Roberts

Not just Sokka's. Do you remember June Pippinpaddleopsicopolis? Katara is just a ride or die. :D

Crystalrose

lmaoo I love seeing each password y'all create before i watch the video

Lizzy Gayle

One of the funniest moments in the show for me is when Aang shows them his macaroni Firelord Ozai. Too cute!

Peter Shim

I'm dead after that fire nation joe rogan joke lmao

zuko has my favorite line in this episode, “can’t you see we’re busy?” *continues to makeout* it kills me EveryTime

Love this episode! I once edited a movie poster for it, for fun: https://64.media.tumblr.com/4ef22bf8372b538ae44c8150461911c2/tumblr_mvutawLiTs1t0uv63o1_500.png

Beginning of S3 is a bit more like s1, but in the fire nation. Episodes aren't as strong in my opinion, but trust me, after the next few its nothing but 9s and 10s

Michelle

i'd say everything from the day of black sun onwards are pure bangers. but even the first half of S3 has some of the best in the series like puppetmaster, the beach and the roku-sozin backstory episode.

Maria

Footloose episode!

Erica Pierce

Can’t WAIT for the beach episode

Brimmy

I don't know if u've been told yet and i know that u guys have finished S3 already (someone else can probably explain this better but i'm gonna give it a whirl) It had been written that Iroh wouldn't speak to zuko in the beginning it didn't necessarily happen because Mako passed away but it did give them time to find a new VA for Iroh so it just worked out nicely also \vagina forehead\ I'm honestly screaming that's a better name than what Sokka gave him XD

Considering it’s been a hundred years I always imagine Aang’s slang is the equivalent of hearing someone today go “ gee wilikers this music is the cat’s meow.”

Chelle

The thing Aang uses as a headband is actually part of the school uniforms (they’re meant to be used as a belt), that’s why all the kids had them. You can see them all wearing them on their waists beforehand

Flammy-o hotman, Flammy-o... (Read it clapping)

So an Avatar theory from TikTok fits perfectly here and I had to share, though I can't find the original creator (and you guys have watched the whole show now so this shouldn't spoil anything). When Aang learns to fire bend it's shown that the original firebending teaching method was The Dragon Dance or something like that, which would make sense as an ancient way to pass down bending forms before the written word. In the final battle it looks like Ozai used the Phoenix Flight dance position when he's actually, you know, flying. So how would Ozai know a dance move from 100 years ago which a firebender can use to fly, while the general populace have never heard of it? The royal family hoarded the knowledge and taught only the family these forms, while outlawing dance to the general populace. This made sure the Royal Family remained superior benders while the people just thought that dancing wasn't useful knowledge. Don't know how true it is/ was intended to be but have to admit I kind of love it.

Michelle

What was that thing yall said we should look forward tonight btw? Are you gonna post it today instead? I got curious about that and i had to ask.

The Fire Nation was very heavily influenced by Japan, particularly Imperial Japan (a heavily naval island nation with an absolute ruler and war for conquest). Japan, similar to America, having a very unfortunate habit of whitewashing, or outright completely ignoring their history in their textbooks. In this case, it can be compared to the Japanese war crimes against the Chinese in the Second World War.

I'm sure they know that much. Or at least I sincerely hope.

1yoyoyo2

Scary thing is the censorship of dark parts of a nation's history is hardly unique to the USA. Pretty much every country with Imperial aspirations in their past has done it.

1yoyoyo2

Yeah i’d say this is less about American indoctrination (although it is probably part of it) and more about dictatorships like North Korea. I mean, American history IS biased and taught in a less than honest way in schools, but we still generally learn about the bad shit we did. Plus, we don’t have to have a large framed picture of our President on our walls that we chant to like a deity. I mean, Trump would have liked that, and I’m sure some of his devotees were that into him, but it’s hardly the norm. I can’t think of any other President that would have entertained that level of fanaticism, if not purely because it would just be a terrible look to embrace being seen as above the nation as a whole. This is more like the Kim Jongs or Imperial Japan, or insert Chinese dynasty here, where Emperors/Dictators are/were deified.

SeanTankTop

Well the China/NK/Japan angle is just painfully obvious, isn’t it? I mean duh of course that has a super direct bearing. We’re just in more lockstep on drawing more localized parallels. Maybe it’s a bit more of a stretch but that material is obviously more Interesting to us. These’s are American storytellers btw in a supremely dark era, and we’re pretty cognizant and viscerally connected to the current events of when this was made. Also, we’re sorta joking a bit too.

1yoyoyo2

I get that. Idk if I’d say this is a particularly dark era in the grand scheme of things though. I’d call the World Wars darker; hell, i’d say the Great Depression was darker. The American westward expansion makes anything today look trivial. Then you have the CIVIL WAR, where more people died than in any other conflict in American History and where racial tensions nearly caused the nation to split. Look, I am not denying this is a turbulent time, but we are still lucky to be at relative peace. I’m here to talk Avatar, not politics though, so I am sorry to keep getting into that.
