EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Oh man I'm so excited!!!

Kay

Junji Ito is the GOAT. I have 14 of his anthology collections 😂. Adult Swim finally did justice to properly adapting Ito’s work. Colin Stetson (who also did the soundtrack for Hereditary) on the soundtrack was a stroke of genius too!

So I was born in '91. My older sister was in the air force and stationed in Japan, so when came back stateside, she brought back a lot of swag. Any manga or anime she picked up, she gave to me. It was all in Japanese so I couldn't read it, but TL;DR I got my hands on Uzumaki when I was around 8 or 9 years old. Couldn't read it, but the visuals spoke for themselves and man seeing it be just as unsettling and bring back those memories was fantastic! Getting to experience it again vicariously with you guys definitely validates like 25 years of heebie jeebies 🤣

I liked the movie from 2000 even though I heard it couldn’t get all the parts from the original so I’m curious about this one

Shout out Abe the editor for the rec Ito usually doesn’t focus much on character or characterization, more pulpy sci-fi/horror (the American magazine that published him was called Pulp)

Travis Lee

Oh wow, I remember the manga of this. Scared the crap out of me. I can't wait to see the show now.

Kelvin

it's not super well known, but it is quite creepy/surreal.

Kay

To comment on the characterization, Uzumaki is actually an Ito work where he does flesh out the characters a bit more compared to his other works. Minor critiques of the first episode are talking about the pacing and how much they are condensing the manga. I'll wait to finish the whole thing to make a judgement call on that. Junji Ito in an interview about the Adult Swim adaptation spoke extremely highly of this adaptation. He said the screenplay he read for it was really well thought out in reorganizing the plot and he praised the screenwriter for doing a great job. The manga though is a tome basically. As much as I would LOVE an unbridged version of this, I think it's actually smart to condense this story and I trust they are able to do it. There's a part in the manga before Shuichi's dad dies where Shuichi's mom throws out his spiral collection and he FREAKS the fuck out. So there was more shown of the descent of Shuichi's dad's mental state.

I read one of the manga stories several years ago and it was so insane how scary it was. I don't know how they did it. I was disturbed by it for days after as a fully grown adult. It's kind of like what Black Mirror wishes it could be...but different I guess.

Did anyone else have trouble syncing this video up with the show? Seemed like the video was running slightly faster. Had never heard of this show, checked it out solely because of the reaction and I'm glad I did. Weird and trippy, looking forward to the next episode.

Kay

Different fps if you're watching it from from Adult Swim (29.97fps) or HBO Max (25fps). I had the same issue with my Japanese copy that was ripped from the Adult Swim premiere. The HBO Max version synced with theirs.

Tim Chaos

I have the same problem, I’m syncing with Max and gotta pause the reaction every minute or so. Edit- I tried with Adult Swim and had the same issue. Oh well! Loved the reaction anyway

Travis Lee

Oh dang, that explains it. I'm watching from HBO Max and they were constantly commenting ahead of what was happening. And then I'd try to sync it up and then they'd be behind. But then they'd be ahead and I thought I was going crazy. Constantly the image would not sync up when I thought it was. It was like trying to sweep a wave back into the ocean. What streaming is Adult Swim on? Do they have their own streaming?

Travis Lee

I was going nuts with this. Why would they run it at different speeds betwixt the two?????????

Bighead

Halfway through the reaction and I noticed that you guys were in b&w too!! Lol, love the commitment.

SeanTankTop

we'll see if we can change our Frame rate on our end so there's no timing mess up in the future

Kay

Oh! One another thing that would have been cool to add to the anime, in the manga, there was also more scenes with Azami growing more and more obsessed with Shuichi. She calls his house everyday, she starts showing up to his place and knocking on his door for hours, and then she eventually rents an apartment next door to live near Shuichi's house! lol
