Love OutKast. Great Album. Hope you guys do some more off of Stankonia, also

Decatur Psalm is just a cautionary tale of the traps of growing up in that kind of neighbourhood. The first 2 verses are characters and examples, then the third verse is the older, wiser man telling them to be smarter.

THIS WAS A PLEASANT SURPRISE INDEED! I HAVE SEEN A COUPLE OF "OUTKAST- ATLiens" REACTIONS IN THE PAST BUT I KNEW I WOULD GET TRUE EMOTION & FEELING FROM YOU GUYS, ALONG WITH A LITTLE BACKSTORY & HISTORY AS WELL. GREAT REACTION AS ALWAYS KAI & DAD! NEXT ON MY ALBUM REACTION WISHLIST (THAT'S ACTUALLY IN THE BACKGROUND): THE GENIUS (GZA) "LIQUID SWORDS".🙏

Pleased as punch that ya'll did this one!! This album had a HUGE impact on me in high school (I'm aging myself). It is absolutely brilliant, beautiful and chalked full of interesting and deep meaning and concepts. Also, this album really opened my eyes to so much about music in general. ATLiens is like a tree and there are so many things they branch out to that makes you go down worm holes. As I listened, there were some things I didn't want to forget because it would be so cool if ya'll covered this stuff sometime on the channel. - Dad mentioned not hearing Quincy Jones but being aware of him as a producer. You should review "100 ways" by Quincy Jones...absolutely beautiful -The guitar on "Wheelz of Steel" is a sample from a song from 1972 called "Focus 3" by a band called Focus. SUCH an amazing song, it's a whole vibe. -When Big Boi mentions putting the "Heat in my baby momma's name...he was referring to the utility bill. So, sometimes if you are in a bad financial situation and can't pay your heat bill and move. You cannot get the utility in your name, so you may be forced to put it in someone else's (sometimes even a dependent). I believe that line is about him referring to a bad financial time and having to survive Ok, back to it (I paused to get that out) ...hope this isn't annoying but I had to type this out before I forgot. Aside from a.couple tracks this album is a masterpiece.

On "Wheelz of Steel".... Wheelz, I believe, refers to the two turn tables when they are being scratched to make hip hop and Steel refers to how "hard" (great, or a force to be reckoned with) the workmanship of the dj that is doing the scratching is. This chorus felt like an ode to the origins of hip hop. It's cool how Outkast is able to cover SO MUCH ground in their music within the confines of the few minutes they have. -"It took your momma 9 months to make it, but it only to that n----, 30 minutes to take it" refers to how high life and sex should be regarded. This seems like a double entendre Referring to how long it takes for life to be created vs how long it takes for virginity to be taken. Big Boi follows it with "don't want no Aids, no claps or no rabies" (when someone gets shot it is sometimes referred to getting clapped). So, it seems like he combines the act of taking life and creating life in a few lines. So amazing

Jazzy Belle. Also a double Entendre or is it quadruple? 🤔 So, like you said Jazzy Belle = Jezebel BUT also "Jazzy (a slang back in the day meaning fancy) and Belle, like Southern Belle - which is a term used to refer to a Southern Woman who acts in a certain fancy and well to do way.

Kai, I really like how you broke down "Mainstream". That and "Ova Da Woodz" have ALWAYS been my least favorite tracks on the album. I mean, I love the sound and instrumentation maybe it's that other artists muddy Outkast waters to me but I do appreciate your passionate take on it. Thanks

If you want to hear some REALLY good scratching, check out the song "Pump Me Up" by Will Smith feat. Jazzy Jeff

Brenda T.

Andre dated Erykah Badu from 1995 - 1999, and they had their son, Seven, in 1997, so that may have had a lot to do with Andre's transformation as well. Also it will be a crime against music history if you don't play Bombs Over Bagdad (first the song and then the video separately) for your dad. It's like them at their peak of creativity and popularity.

SlumpJones

Honestly, tons of DJ Jazzy Jeff tracks have amazing cuts and scratches

Peter

E.T. (Extraterrestrial) is my favorite track on the album by far. I get such a strong emotional response from it.

Show

Your pops would enjoy Scarface. Play the Fix album then double to old Ghetto Boys.

Decatur psalms I always took as a warning about the sins of the gang life, psalm is a religious song so this song is part of the gangster bible cause it cautions about parts of gang activities going awry. And the big lady from Decatur sings is a play on it’s not over til the fat lady sings

TheFrontRoom

Definitely need to hear your Quincy Jones recommendation. I like your description of this album as being “like a tree” I got the feeling I could listen to it 20 times and still only barely scratch the surface! - Kai’s dad

Tawanda

Kai, tell me you're gonna do an album listen for Aquemini?! It's sitting right behind y'all beggin' for a listen, lol. Still my favorite Outkast album.

Tawanda

Okay, I made this comment half way through the video but the comment stands...Aquemini!

Tawanda

I second this motion, Kai, Aquemini full reaction --> BOB after, lol

Jessica Pinkston

Debra Killings plays Bass Guitar at my church. I knew she was our resident living legend but today I discovered something else that she did! She's an amazing human being and sings so good on the hook to the last song. I am familiar and a fan of OutKast, but this album came out when I was 9 and this is my first time hearing it all the way through. Great video.
