OK I know I'm late to the party and you probably won't be reading this but I had to get it out and add my two cents on the Iron Man slender lmao This might be an unpopular take but to me Iron Man is the MOST human Avengers out there which can be counterintuitive since he's painted as an emotionally distant/egocentric/genius billionaire (not the most relatable characteristics) but hear me out. First of all, he's one of the only Avengers out there whose morals and flaws really gets explored and challenged and this film is the quintessence of that. I mean, this was a Captain America movie but Iron Man carried the whole plot as well as the best characterization. Civil War tells us about conflicts that are created and then perpetuated by trauma and loss. The Avengers while indeed saving the majority in their missions still end up causing massive casualties without looking further into the simple ‘kill the bad guy at any cost’ narrative. No matter how good and well-intentioned they are, they’re still a group of individuals with immense powers, living lavish for most, who can just decide at any given moment to just fly off to wherever on earth without permission and impose their version of justice by force. They NEED some limited limitation and supervision by a global organization like the United Nation because they are the only human and can make mistakes. Mistakes like ULTRON made by Iron Man himself. His own ego and humanity led him to want to protect the earth and he ended up failing because he acted on his own (just like the Avengers do as a group). That is why he signed the Accords. He understood his own flaws as human and accepted to restrict himself in order to cooperate with an entity that could moderate conflicts as well as their relations with the rest of humanity. Now, in this case, the UN was wrong about Bucky and the Oh so perfect Captain America was once again right (I’m sorry, his movies are indeed the best in the MCU, but as a character, I CANNOT bring myself to like him. He’s so perfect, even his own traumas make him look good. Such an inhuman, predictable and boring character imo), BUT that doesn’t negate the first problematic being that the Avengers still need supervision. We’re in a Superhero movie so ofc it doesn’t really sound super fancy to introduce an entity like the UN that could maybe potentially prevent our protagonists to have badass fights and make buildings explode. So yes, for plot purposes, they had to make the UN the bad guys and take them out of the picture. But still, Stark was right about wanting to cooperate with them and Steven Rogers is a dangerously ideological child man who just doesn’t want his freedom in the least bit impeded. Finally, to go back to Stark. The beginning of this movie made it clear that he had unresolved trauma due to his parents’ passing. This was carried throughout with his own guilt regarding the Sokovia casualties. He tries to compensate by giving away his money (Student Funds) and taking responsabilities (UN Accords), but at the end, it just becomes too much for him. His ultimate punishment is being brought back to the state of victim instead of oppressor and having his own oppressor, Bucky, stand right in front of him as he realizes his parents were actually murdered by the latter. I’m sorry but we, as an audience, can take a step back and calmly judge him for losing control but how many of us would actually be capable of doing that in real life when faced with this scenario? Personally, I don’t know if I could stop myself from killing my parents’ murderer. Is that the right thing ? No. Not only because Bucky wasn’t really himself when he did this, but also because it only perpetuate violence. But in Stark’s own words: “I don’t care. He killed my mum.” That line fucking kills me because it is just so fucking human and raw. I was ‘rooting’ for Bucky and CA, but I could never be mad at Iron Man for that. Sorry for the rant lmaoo, had fun rewatching the movie with you tho :)
