Hi, D&W Patrons! Io here. When we polled fans on Twitter a couple of days back, the overwhelming majority said that they wanted to see the original script for the comic as a Patreon reward. (Well, OK, everybody voted "yes" except me.) Instead of just doing a straight-up text dump, though, I thought it'd be more interesting to look at the script a couple of pages at a time and give some behind-the-scenes commentary on how everything came together.

Since we're still figuring out this whole Patreon thing, this first update is open to all - kind of a preview to give everybody an idea of what to expect from future installments so you can figure out whether it's worth the jump to a higher tier. All subsequent pages will only be available to our generous True Internauts.

Brainstorming for D&W kicked off around mid-2014 - the same time we were putting the finishing touches on Dreamspace 3.03 - but it wasn't until January 2015 that we actually started working on a formal script for the comic. Ultimately, that ramp time was pretty important, as it let us really hammer out fine details and designs before we dove into writing proper.

We made the decision to pick up from Dreamspace 3.03 without spending a lot of time rehashing Dan's story for new readers, which was a bit of a gamble. Instead, we compressed the most important details into these opening pages:

1. Dan used to be a VR jockey before Things Went Wrong.

2. His living situation sucks.

3. He's kind of an asshole...

4. ...and he has a bit of a thing for drugs.

(It's probably worth noting that the first pass on Chapter 1 was Claire flying solo. What you see here is fairly close to her original draft, with just a couple of punch-ups from me; mainly Dan's pissy drug monologue and that poster.)
