basically the shadow was only able to reach her because in the hole its just pure shadow which allows it to extend even more. his shadow wouldn't have been able to reach her otherwise

Just defending Shikamaru a bit. Shikamaru thinks that having to participate in the Chunin Exam is already troublesome and on top of that has has to fight women is just even more troublesome due to his experiences he has seen people with women. He just hates having to deal with troublesome things that waste energy mentally or physically therefore he is always saying "Men-do-ku-se" or "Men-do-ku-sai" which means how/so troublesome. I would say he does underestimate women at first since he believes men should be stronger than women based on the physiques. He is not perfect but he is still one of my favourite character. Time will reveal.

I've always thought that one of the reasons Hinata's father was so hard on her and her sister is because he was trying to justify his own survival. His twin brother sacrificed himself so if his nephew was more deserving of being the heir to the family then he should have died instead of his brother. Basically he had survivors guilt and was projecting his guilt onto his children. He tried to deal with his brothers death by proving that he and his children were the rightful heirs of the family, but Neji's skill made that lie impossible to believe. Just my two cents anyway.
