Could I recommend Lupin 3: The First. Good self contained story with tons of history behind. I was just blow away from trailers and animation had too see it. I can't properly sell you on it but you should check it out

actually spirited away came out in 2001 or 2002 so it's been the #1 movie for much much longer than what you guys calculated at the beginning before mugen took that spot :))) it also won academy awards and other awards i believe!

Studio Ghibli is all hand drawn and the guy in the elevator you are talking about is the Radish Spirit, or Daikon Radish

Yay! Always a fun watch! Also, Michelle I loved kiki's as a kid toooo! I didn't know what ghibli was yet but was a big fan! These movies really leave it to the viewer to piece the narrative together, they use a lot of symbolism and visual storytelling. It's awesome! I'm excited for you guys to dive into more of them!

One of my favorite movies to watch so glad that you all took the time to see it. I think because I watched the English version so many times for so long that the voices don’t match up with the characters for me but it was still awesome watch.

I watched Spirited Away on Cartoon Network years ago before I really understood what anime was and it just blew my mind away as a kid and for that reason it will always have a special place in heart. There's a lot of symbolism that's hard to catch on the first watch and every time I rewatch it, I gain even more appreciation. That being said, Princess Mononoke might be tied with Spirited Away for my favorite Ghibli movie ^_^
