The trick is to not know _anything_ about the monster. The "sequels" thing is complicated, there are a bunch of *universe* movies that but no hard sequel, the other movies so far have been nothing like this - this is a good thing, they're very very different - 10 Cloverfield, the next one, imho is definitely the best (so far). Trivia time: there's some dispute about if A Quiet Place was written to be an in-universe franchise movie but spun off into a whole separate thing..
