I consider this one of the best movies ever made. I could see it was hard to watch, but still super important, and the number of obstacles each man had to face and overcome was astounding. It was so moving that I took a 300 mile detour to Charleston just to see the strand of beach that these brave men died on. A couple of notes: The man who directed this also directed another movie that was VERY similar, The Last Samurai. Thomas: Captain Ray Holt from Brooklyn 99 General who was smoking cigar who you hated: The warden from Shawshank Redemption One of the white soldiers who got in the fight with Denzel: Hector Salamanca from Breaking Bad Denzel won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for this, so yeah, he killed it Also, Frederick Douglas looked like he walked right out of the history book and into the movie

There's obviously a load of stuff to read regarding the battles of the movie, and the 54th and the actual guy who took up the flag at Wagner. My favorite one might be how the Confederate soldiers buried Shaw with his men as an insult, but Shaw's people considered it an honor, and his father even wrote a letter to people who were attempting to retrieve Shaw's remains, explaining that he was in the best place he could be, surrounded by his men. Thanks for this reaction and your perspective on it.
